Happy 4th of July

Happy 4th of July!

On top of Fort Pulaski.

WARNING -HISTORY LESSON- This cannon was stationed at a Union battery on Tybee Island about 1 mile away from the Fort. It was one of many used to pound the Fort for 36 hours taking down the South wall and forcing the ~400 Confederate soldiers in the fort to surrender. This is a "new" style rifle cannon that was used for the first time in this case. Before this day (April 10th, 1862) the Fort was thought invincible because there was no cannon that could shoot far enough to hit the Fort from the ocean. Until this "new technology cannon was tested."

Fort Pulaski was important because it is on the Savannah River and controlled which boats were allowed into and out of Savannah during the war. When they had this Fort the Confederates were able to continue trading cotton to help get funds for weapons, etc. and bring in goods to the South through Savannah. Before the war even began a group from Savannah went to the fort and took it over from the Union and named it a Georgia Fort, then ~ a month later it became a Confederate Fort when the war began. The confederate soldiers were sent to New York for ~ a year and the fort was then used by the union from then on.

BACK TO OUR LIVES:

We started the day at the Rincon Parade. It wasn't quit as good as the Christmas Parade since school is out for summer there were no marching bands and dance teams etc. but still good small town holiday fun.

If you are wondering if it is hot, it is 10:00 in the morning and we have sweat dripping down our faces just from sitting in the sun. It hasn't bothered either of us though, it hasn't been very humid except for when a storm comes through. Austin says it is too hot to do yard projects but that is just because he wants a break from yard projects =).

GP has a float in every parade around the county. We hand out sparkle towel.

Next we met up with Brent who was in the parade and went to lunch in City Market (mom and dad we went to the place I went to with you Tapas).

Then it was off to Fort Pulaski which is on Cockspur Island just before Tybee Island, Tybee is "Savannah's Coast."

Since it was the 4th of July they were doing Cannon Firing demonstrations. VERY loud.

As we were going across the draw bridge into the Fort the man ahead of us noticed a local friend. Can you see what Austin is playing with?

Here's a closer picture. This is the largest alligator we have seen in the wild. Today we are taking the puppies for walk in Magnolia Springs park. It is a 7 million gal/day fresh water spring about an hour north of here. In the hot months (July/Aug) there are suppose to be good alligator views. So maybe tonight there will be some better gator pics.

Patriotic Guy...

After the Fort we went to our favorite local restaurant, Bonna Bella Yacht Club. It was an old Marina that 4 local men bought together and turned into a restaurant. It is on the intercoastal waterway (a high way of water that goes from North Florida to the Carolina's on non-ocean water because of all the barrier islands in Georgia). People pull off the water at the dock and walk up without shoes or a shirt and have a meal. It is very much a place I expect Jimmy Buffet to be hanging out in.

To end the day we went to River Street to watch the big fire works over the river display. My camera ran out of batteries so I didn't get any good pictures except this lovely shot of Brent and Austin. There were awesome fire works, but it was too many people for us, we won't go next year. The entire River pavilion area, River street and all the alley ways down to the River were PACKED with people. We were sitting in the River Street Inn lobby/bar at a window that looks out so it was ok until they started so we went outside. We only stayed for about half of it and then left to beat the traffic.
We went to a BBQ at our friend's house yesterday, his parent's are visiting so they had BBQ game night. We also watched the Daytona 4th of July race, we had planned to get out there big blow up water slide, but it was storming so we stayed inside.
I appreciate all the concerns for missing our blog =). We'll try to post at least once a week again. By the way...we still haven't attempted to fix our camera, we just got a SD card for the old one and are using it for now. Hope you all had a great 4th of July weekend.

1962, huh? I thought the Civil War was a little before that.

PS - Sarah actually found that, but was too nice to say anything. I have no such qualms.

PPS - Thanks for finally posting.

I miss small town parades! Not that this town isn't small...or we don't have a parade, but it just isn't the same.

It looks like you guys are having fun seeing Georgia in all of it's glory.

Happy 4th!

P.S. It took you guys way too long to deal with your camera 'issues'. :)
